St.Catharines, ON (PRWEB) February 2, 2009 -- Restrictions on pesticide use are becoming an issue across North America when it comes to maintaining lawns and other weed prone areas. Rittenhouse now offers a unique solution.
Using patented technology, the Green Steam produces super-heated steam to 650° F to quickly and effectively kill weeds without chemicals. The Green Steam unit uses a standard 20lb. propane tank that will last for approximately eight hours of continuous operation, while the 10-gallon water tank provides three hours of constant operation. The unit uses a deep cycle 12 volt battery to operate the diaphragm pump. The Green Steam can be outfitted with an optional hose reel including 25' of hose. The reel swivels and features an automatic rewind for ease of operation. The compact design of the machine also increases usability, at only 60lbs the Green Steam can be transported easily from site to site. A skid mount version is also available for placement in the back of a truck or utility vehicle.
Cities and municipalities will find the Green Steam to be a very useful tool as part of their regular maintenance programs. It is perfect for eliminating weeds in sidewalks, parking lots and other hardscaped areas. The use of steam means there is no concern over spray drift or residue. In addition to government organizations, private landscapers will appreciate this convenient alternative to chemical weed control.
The Green Steam provides a unique opportunity to be ahead of the curve and ahead of the competition when it comes to implementing a green care program. Visit the Rittenhouse website or call toll free 1-800-461-1041 to inquire further about the Green Steam and other great landscaping products.

Father's Day Gift Ideas
Ok, so not sure who all bought presents for their mommy for Mother's Day but it is almost time to think about dad as Father's Day is quickly approaching. June 15th is the day, so mark it down and maybe you should consider buying something now so you don't have to run out last minute and end up getting something he won't like. Does your dad like to play games while enjoying a cold one outside?? If so how about some of the great outdoor giant games we have right here at Rittenhouse. You can choose from the Giant Chess Game, Giant Quoits which is a really neat game of skill. Try the Giant Tower game which is like Jenga. Maybe your dad likes golf, the golf ball washer is a really neat addition to any yard. If your dad does not like games how about a few neat tools. We have the Fusion 9 Multi Tool by Corona or how about the 22" Machete, not an item to walk down the street with but great for clearing brush or harvesting crops. If Dad hates weeds in his yard or garden he could try the new Electro Weeder

Snow, Steam and Organic Weed Control
Well, for once the weatherman was absolutely correct. We had a little freezing rain last night, followed by 6 inches of fresh snow. So getting to work today required a little more effort than normal. To see our weather in real time radar, use this link: Buffalo Radar

A week or two ago we added a brand new product to our main website. Behold!! It is the Green Steam Weed Killer! What this machine does, is heat up water into steam, then you blast the weeds with the steam and kill those unsightly weeds. Using heat for weed control has been around for a long time, steam is a relatively new tactic. This machine costs around $5000.00, so this is not a tool that the average homeowner can put into their arsenal. But this is something that a municipality can use, or professional landscapers who have clients who require organic solutions for weed control. Keep in mind that the Green Steam Weed Killer is non-selective, meaning that any plant material that comes into contact with the steam is likely to die. So this device is perfect for sidewalks, walkways, fence lines and that kind of situation. Places that you would normally use Round Up.
We are also activlely working on a whole new selection of Organic Weed Control and Pest Control products. Not too much is ready for internet traffic, but you will be able to find the products in this area of our website when it is done.

Revitilizing our Lawn by Aerating and Top Dressing with Compost.
Everyone is talking about environmentally friendly methods of fighting weeds. It would seem as in many other fields, prevention is the best medicine. Established stands of turf that are thin or reedy are ripe for infestation by windblown weed seed and spore. Improved turf density and soil quality are the lawn’s best defense against encroachers.
So as I hear it step one is to aerate. Well, we can do that. We have a number of options for aeration from the manual aerator called the Coring Type Hand Aerator for very small areas to the motorized Lesco Split Drive Drum Type Aerator.
The next step is to over seed or top dress; mixing light soil, seed and fertilizer and spreading it over the lawn. Again we have a number of options available for this procedure. We have the people powered, push unit called the Earthway High Output Spreader that is quite capable of spreading this top dressing material, or the Self-Propelled Turf Top Dresser for those who have large lots to revitalize.
Sometimes top dressing mixes are made with compost as well as with topsoil. Turf performance can be improved with compost. It increases the efficiency of drainage in heavy clay, can make sandy soils’ hold water better, minimizing compaction and surface crusting, and promoting a rise in the level of soil fertility. These enhancements to the soil create an opportunity for better rooting and speedier turf establishment, improved stand quality, and reduced fertilizer needs.
When all that is said and done you should evenly distribute the soil and compost, working it into the lawn improving absorption. People with a small area to do may want to use the Deluxe Groundskeeper rake, which is perfect for this application. Those with larger applications, or lawn care professionals may want to consider using the Drag Mat, as it is most useful in this application.
All in all I’d say we’ve got everything we need to have a great looking lawn this year and we can do it all in an environmentally friendly way. Now all I have to do is con one of the guys into going out and doing the work….Hey Darrin!
