The Product Comparison Website & Bring Back Tim Riley

Well, it sure is getting close to X-Mas and here at Rittenhouse we are past the peak of the Christmas rush. It has been busy lately but we certainly can feel the impact of the economic downturn south of the border ... more on that later in todays post.

Our crack IT team in the IT nerve center, known locally as the "West Wing", has unveiled yet another website. Expanding our web presence and providing even more information to help our customers decide which product best suits their needs. The reason we have had to take these measures and go to the effort to build another complex custom made website is that we have added multiple new product lines. In the past Rittenhouse would normally chose one brand in each product line. This was usually done so that we can focus on providing expertise and parts support without filling our warehouse with similar products. We have since moved past that strategy and are now offering competing product lines.

Here is an example, we are now offering a handful of backpack sprayers. To see the results, click here: Backpack Sprayers

To see the entire website and all the options available you can visit http://www.rittenhousecomparison.com/

Now, on a sadder note. This blogger is distressed that his favourite podcast is now only 2/3 of the fun and entertainment it used to be. Due to the miserable economic circumstances CBS radio in Portland Oregon has been forced to lay-off Tim Riley from the Rick Emerson show on AM 970, the podcast can be found here: www.970.am. Tim is a first class newsman, an humourist, snappy dresser and an all around good guy. He has the classic radio voice and a unique style of news delivery, if you have ever heard his newscast more than a few times you will completely understand what I am talking about here. I will miss his contributions to Rick's show and will continue to be a loyal listener. To keep up to date with Tim's lay-off and his take on the days news you can go to his website:

I will miss you Tim, hang tough and hurry back.

Rittenhouse Videos now on Youtube

Wow! Its December already.

A few new developments here on the Rittenhouse front. We have been shooting video of certain products for a while now and editing it as fast as we can. But the first batch has been uploaded to Youtube for your viewing pleasure.

Here: Rittenhouse

Things are very busy here today because it is Cyber Monday. Lots of gifts are being purchased for gardeners on our main website. If you would like to see some of our selection I would encourage you to take a look at this page:

Christmas Gifts for Gardeners

Start growing your hair, stop taking showers and fix up that old VW Microbus. Why you ask???? Well rumor has it, that the remaining members of the Grateful Dead (known as the Core 4 in Deadhead circles) are reuniting and taking the freakshow back on the road for an arena tour in the Spring. Hopefully it will be more successful and inspiring than the last time this happened back in '04 (I think). The band recently played at two Barack Obama benefit shows and that there is a possibility they are playing one of the inauguration parties in January. To keep up to date with all the rumors, the tour dates, cities and the musicians who are hitting the road with the Core 4, I would recommend the message board on this website:

Internet Directories

Do you have a Landcaping business you would like to promote? Do you want to rank higher in Google? Do you want to find new customers for your landscaping business?

Well, Rittenhouse can help you.

We own and operate 2 Internet Directories for landscaping companies and consumers. We are trying to help landscaping companies find new customers and also to help consumers and property owners find a local landscaper. It is 100% free for everybody to use. That means that a Landscaping company can register for free and a consumer is free to use the directory as often as they wish. Rittenhouse is picking up the tab for the hosting and bandwidth of these websites. The benefits to Landscaping companies are two fold. Firstly, its free advertising. Secondly, they received a link from our directory and therefore get to acquire Page Rank which in theory will help them rank hire in the search engines. For further information on Page Rank, just type that term into Google and for a complete explaination.

For US Landscapers:

Internet Directory Landscaping

For Canadian Landscapers:

Directory of Canadian Landscapers

So click on over to the directories and take 2 minutes and sign up. That is all for now, thanks.

Gardeners Best Garden Supply Store

In partnership with Yahoo, Rittenhouse has opened a Yahoo store with many of our most popular products as a new sales channel. It is great for customers who prefer to buy goods through the secure method of Paypal. We do not offer Paypal on the Rittenhouse as a form of payment.

The store can be found at www.gardenersbest.com. We are slowly adding new products to that website. So check back frequently.

New Products & Paul Newman RIP

Hello All,

We have been very busy adding new products to the main Rittenhouse website. Below is a brief description and a link to the new products if you would like further information.

The Green Gorilla Battery Powered Sprayer:

As a sprayer company that is over 90 years old, we see a lot of innovative sprayers come and go. There is always somebody out there trying to re-invent the "wheel" ... or in this case, re-invent the sprayer. However we have never seen a sprayer such as this one. Instead of a pump this sprayer uses a little battery powered air compressor to fill the tank with compressed air and that is what propels the liquid. So no more pumping!! Basically you just plug in the battery pack the day before you need the Green Gorilla, then when it has a full charge you attach it to the sprayer, turn it on and let the compressor fill the tank with air. Then you are ready to spray. I was amazed at the height that this unit can spray, I was hitting the ceiling of our factory which is at least 20 feet high. So this hand held sprayer would be perfect for fruit trees such as apples, oranges and peaches. The beauty of this sprayer, the chemical does not have to touch the pump ... because there is no pump.

****Special Rittenhouse Product Preview****

Heated Hose

This innovative product is brand new to Rittenhouse, so new that its not even going to be available for sale for about 3 months. But here is your sneak preview. This is an excellent item for those of us living in the northern climes and need to use running water outdoors in the winter time. Which for obvious reasons is very tricky. However this new hose plugs in and has a heating element inside the hose to keep the water flowing. The target market is farming, such as livestock raising, construction and for flooding the backyard hockey rinks. It will be ready to ship in December 2008. It is available for pre-order now. Check out the Rittenhouse website for more details.

Paul Newman RIP

We are saddened by the loss of Paul Newman. He was a great actor and a great man. One of my favorite movies was The Sting and he was fantastic in that movie. Go here for his IMDB entry >> Paul Newman . If you take a look at his list of movies I am sure you will find many of his movies that you enjoyed.

It also must be mentioned the massive amount of work he did for charity. His line of salad dressings are both fantastic and part of the money goes to a worth while cause.

RIP Paul Newman

Rittenhouse Integrates Web 2.0 Technology into its E-Commerce Website

ST. CATHARINES, ON – Rittenhouse has just launched an updated version of its popular E-Commerce website. In the rapidly developing sector of E-Commerce, web savvy customers are demanding more from their shopping experience. It is becoming evermore important to remain on the leading edge of technology. Being on the leading edge is exactly where Rittenhouse is with the new version of their already popular website. The new site boasts Web 2.0 technology that further engages the customer during their shopping experience and increases the ease and efficiency with which they shop. For example, the most prevalent new feature is the Quick View window, which customers can access by clicking on the Quick View icon that appears when they mouse over a thumbnail picture of a product. The Quick View window allows customers to access the most prudent information about the product, price and will allow the customer to place that item in their shopping cart without navigating to an entirely new page. Professionals and other customers who need to make their shopping experience as efficient as possible will especially appreciate this feature.

Another time saving feature is the standardized shipping rate system which can be accessed from the side bar of the website or engaged when a pop-up appears while navigating the site. The customer simply inserts their postal or zip code and as they add items to their cart, they are presented with an accurate UPS Ground shipping rate. This eliminates the guesswork or any uncertainties involving shipping costs.

Rittenhouse has also added a new product category, Industrial Supply, which caters to the construction and other “heavy-duty” industries. The Rittenhouse Industrial Supply category specializes in liquid handling equipment, but also features other important supplies and accessories such as security locks and hydro seeders.

The updated version of www.rittenhouse.ca is sure to increase the speed and efficiency that customers shop with and therefore making their shopping experience more enjoyable. This new technology was developed specifically for Rittenhouse in partnership with New Vintage Software. As E-Commerce evolves and transforms to customer’s increasing demands, Rittenhouse is more than happy to oblige in giving those customers the best possible online experience. Rittenhouse is already looking to the future to further improve their website and is very excited about revolutionizing the industries they serves.

Water Faucet Lock .. its Cuil

At Rittenhouse we move of large volume of Water Faucet locks. We particularily send many locks to the parched States in the American southwest, such as Arizona, California, Nevada and for some reason Colorado. We have added a new model to our line up. This new model allows you to have muliple units and use 1 single key to open all of them.

With the rising cost of water, we have heard many horror stories of stolen water from our customers. Many times they suspect its some nearby construction workers, or maybe the neighbor is filling up his pool while you are at work, or it could simply be some vandals who think it is funny to turn on your garden faucet and let your hard earned money spill all over the ground. No matter how it is happening, the end result is the same, a few weeks later you get a massive water bill from your local utility company. At that point we get a panicky phone call from the homeowner and they order locks and have them over nighted to them by UPS.

But, you can beat the rush and get your locks now before the water bandits strike your wallet! Click below to check out our newest locks.

Water Faucet Locks

There was some big news in the internet search world this morning, a brand new search engine. This search engine seems to have some heavy weights behind it, ex Google employees and some former person from Alta Vista. They have also tapped some of the high rolling Silicon Valley venture capital firms for backing. But I have to say, I am not overly impressed with the search results so far. It could very well be that they were not expecting such a massive amount of traffic on the first day, so I will reserve judgement. But go on over to Cuil and check it out yourself.

That is all, as you were.

Ceremonial Ground Breaking Shovel

I was saddened last week to hear of the passing of Tim Russert. I am a huge fan of Meet the Press and especially of Mr. Russert, a favourite son of nearby Buffalo New York. We share a love of the Buffalo Bills and he will be sorely missed on Sunday mornings. His fairness to all sides of the political spectrum is rare in todays world. RIP Tim Russert.

Now, on a lighter note.

Rittenhouse is pleased to offer a lower cost ceremonial ground breaking shovel. As a garden tool retailer we have all sorts of gardening and landscaping tools. When I was surfing around Google several weeks or so ago, I was typing in shovels. I found that there are people charging up to $200 for a chrome plated shovel to be used in ceremonial ground breaking events. You know what I am talking about, where a bunch of people in suits (and sometimes the local politicians) gather in a field and put on shiny white hard hats, take a shovel and dig up a little dirt while photographers take a bunch of pictures. Well, at Rittenhouse we have a beautiful polished stainless steel shovel with a red oak handle that would work perfectly for your ground breaking ceremony without spending a fortune. We have them listed at $56.00 right now. If you wanted you could take them to an engraving place to turn the shovel into a keepsake or to frame in the lobby of the building you are about to build.

So, I present .... the Rittenhouse Ceremonial Groundbreaking Shovel.
That is all for today.

Turbo Turf Hydro Seeders

Good Day, Rittenhouse is now carrying the Turbo Turf line of Hydroseeding Equipment. Turbo Turf has been making hydro seeding systems since 1990. Turbo Turf Systems made a breakthrough with simple, lightweight, extremely powerful trouble free units that are used by thousands, including landscapers, lawncare operators, erosion control, cemeteries, parks etc. We are selling this line of machines only in Canada. The price for these units is much more affordable for the smaller contractors that can not justify the purchase of a mechanical agitation machine. The Turbo Turf Seeders are available from as small as 50 gallons to 1500 gallons. We have added some of the units to our site but more are being added daily. So check back for a wider selection soon.

Walnut Trail - Experience Outdoor Living

Hey, a new website has appeared and it is very similar to our ;-).

It focuses on higher end, quality products to beautify your outdoor living spaces. It is not complete yet, lots more product to appear on it, but it is ready for orders.

Walnut Trail

In other news, this blogger is upset that Tiger Woods has lost a PGA tournament. Down in Miami at Doral, the Blue Monster, he could not make it win number 8 in a row. I am a big fan of Tiger but I know people who are sick and tired of watching him win tournament after tournament. I feel he is the absolute best golfer of all time and complaining about him winning is just plain silly. Its like complaining about Wayne Gretzky winning the scoring championship again, or Babe Ruth winning the home run title. So lighten up folks, you are watching history, there will never be a better golfer in your lifetime and try and enjoy it while it lasts. You will be able to tell your grandkids that you watched Tiger on his incredible streak in 2008.

Chapin Slide Sprayer

New Product! (s)

We have added a new supplier to round out our backpack and hand sprayer line, Chapin Manufacturing. They are a long established company, located not very far from us in Batavia New York.

We have added a few products in time for the spring rush. The Slide Sprayer, model 6002, which is similar the the Trombone Sprayer that we have been selling for a decade. The Slide Sprayer is a little heavier construction and is very useful for the home owner who needs to spray high up in trees. This sprayer is also useful to spray cleaning solutions on the sides of buildings.

Here is the Chapin Slide Sprayer

Snow, Steam and Organic Weed Control

Well, for once the weatherman was absolutely correct. We had a little freezing rain last night, followed by 6 inches of fresh snow. So getting to work today required a little more effort than normal. To see our weather in real time radar, use this link: Buffalo Radar

"you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows" - Bob Dylan

A week or two ago we added a brand new product to our main website. Behold!! It is the Green Steam Weed Killer! What this machine does, is heat up water into steam, then you blast the weeds with the steam and kill those unsightly weeds. Using heat for weed control has been around for a long time, steam is a relatively new tactic. This machine costs around $5000.00, so this is not a tool that the average homeowner can put into their arsenal. But this is something that a municipality can use, or professional landscapers who have clients who require organic solutions for weed control. Keep in mind that the Green Steam Weed Killer is non-selective, meaning that any plant material that comes into contact with the steam is likely to die. So this device is perfect for sidewalks, walkways, fence lines and that kind of situation. Places that you would normally use Round Up.

We are also activlely working on a whole new selection of Organic Weed Control and Pest Control products. Not too much is ready for internet traffic, but you will be able to find the products in this area of our website when it is done.

Organic Pest Control

That is all for now, check back later.

Root Feeding, Walnut Trail & Jeff Healey

Two issues that I would like to discuss today, one a new lower price for a long standing product and the announcement that a new site is up and running and ready to take orders.

The Webster Deep Root Feeder has been a Rittenhouse product for as long as I have been working here. It is a gas powered root feeder that places granular product in the root zone of trees. This machine is really only for professional landscapers but occasionally we get property owners who prefer to feed their own trees as opposed to bringing in arborists or landscapers to take care of their trees. We are now offering a lower price for the Webster Deep Root Feeder. We have lowered the price by about a $100.00, just in time for spring!

Walnut Trail is a brand new eccomerce website. It is chock full of products for your home and garden with the emphasis on stlye. Take a look at the site here:

Walnut Trail

There will be new products added to the Walnut Trail website frequently, so bookmark it.

Meanwhile, we are saddened by the untimely death of Jeff Healey, a Canadian musical icon who tragically lost his life long battle with cancer yesterday in Toronto. If you have had the pleasure to seeing him play, you will understand what a loss this is for the Canadian music scene. Here is a video from the 1980's to remember Jeff Healey, Angel Eyes.

RIP Jeff Healey

Bird Control

After years of looking for the best bird control products, we have finally settled on a line of bird deterrents and bird control products. These items are completely humane, they are meant to keep the birds away and force them to go someplace else instead of fouling up your property or boat.

Take look at this page of bird control products that we have recently added to the Rittenhouse website.

I have been digging this song by Eddie Vedder from the Into the Wild soundtrack. I caught this movie on an airplane recently and it was fantastic if you can handle a movie with a sad ending. Anyway, Vedder does the soundtrack and he covers a song originally more than a decade old by a Canadian band, Indio. Vedder's version of Hard Sun is spot on, you can listen and watch here, Hard Sun. Enjoy the song, watch the movie.

Peace Out!

Revitilizing our Lawn by Aerating and Top Dressing with Compost.

Everyone is talking about environmentally friendly methods of fighting weeds. It would seem as in many other fields, prevention is the best medicine. Established stands of turf that are thin or reedy are ripe for infestation by windblown weed seed and spore. Improved turf density and soil quality are the lawn’s best defense against encroachers.

So as I hear it step one is to aerate. Well, we can do that. We have a number of options for aeration from the manual aerator called the Coring Type Hand Aerator for very small areas to the motorized Lesco Split Drive Drum Type Aerator.

The next step is to over seed or top dress; mixing light soil, seed and fertilizer and spreading it over the lawn. Again we have a number of options available for this procedure. We have the people powered, push unit called the Earthway High Output Spreader that is quite capable of spreading this top dressing material, or the Self-Propelled Turf Top Dresser for those who have large lots to revitalize.

Sometimes top dressing mixes are made with compost as well as with topsoil. Turf performance can be improved with compost. It increases the efficiency of drainage in heavy clay, can make sandy soils’ hold water better, minimizing compaction and surface crusting, and promoting a rise in the level of soil fertility. These enhancements to the soil create an opportunity for better rooting and speedier turf establishment, improved stand quality, and reduced fertilizer needs.

When all that is said and done you should evenly distribute the soil and compost, working it into the lawn improving absorption. People with a small area to do may want to use the Deluxe Groundskeeper rake, which is perfect for this application. Those with larger applications, or lawn care professionals may want to consider using the Drag Mat, as it is most useful in this application.

All in all I’d say we’ve got everything we need to have a great looking lawn this year and we can do it all in an environmentally friendly way. Now all I have to do is con one of the guys into going out and doing the work….Hey Darrin!

OASE Pumps added to the Rittenhouse website

Years ago Rittenhouse used to carry some OASE water gardening products. We switched to a different brand but now we are back with OASE products!

From my experience OASE likely has the best name in water gardening products, known for extremely high quality pumps. OASE is a German company that pays attention to every detail.

One of the first OASE items that we have added to our ecommerce website is this OASE Nautilus pump. We are offering 3 different sizes. Our website is showing complete technical information to help you choose the right pump for your backyard water garden.

Here is the best part about buying a OASE Nautilus pump .... the warranty! You automatically get a 3 year warranty, if you go online and register your OASE Nautilus pump you get an additional 2 years of warranty. That is exceptional for the water garden industry.

New Honda Engine Added to the Rittenhouse Website

This is all very exciting. We have added a new product to our website. Its not a new product to Rittenhouse, but it is a new addition to our website.

Behold!!! the Honda 20 hp gasoline engine!

We have been using this engine on our manufacturing facilites for quite some time now. We normally use on our 500 gallon high height tree sprayer. It takes a big engine combined with a large pump to spray 80 feet in the air, where these little hideous bugs hide way up in the trees. You may be aware, or you may not be, that there is a very large infestation of insects destroying forests at an alarming rate in the American southwest, west and the Canadian Rockies. Take at look at this headline from Wyoming in todays news:

"It's a Bad Time to be a Tree"

The Honda 20 hp engine we are selling is not limited to spraying equipment, it can be used on all sorts of powered equipment that requires 20 ponies.

A little editorial note regarding Honda engines, there are many knock-offs of the Honda small engines on the market today. They are usually made in China and the quality is simply not comparable to the genuine Honda we sell. The Chinese knock-offs may be suitable for light duty applications but it is not recommended for commercial applications that require the dependability of the world renowned Honda small engines. So be careful when choosing a new engine, sometimes its worth the extra few dollars for a genuine Honda gas engine.

Have a great weekend!

Have you seen Kid Zeppelin?

News from the Shipping Department - Invasion of the Wasps

From our Shipping Manager Darrin, who fights through the pain to make sure you get your order ASAP! I suggested we use his face as bait for the wasp invasion and spray Raid directly on his lovable mug, but he wisely declined.

On to his tale.

------------------------------

This a little known fact here at Rittenhouse. Wasps are a very common occurrence as our yard is wide open connected to farms. We periodically bring large crates, frames etc to thaw out from the cold and unbeknownst to me a few of them have emerged in the warehouse where my department and my desk are. Now here at Rittenhouse we have many experts in the agriculture/home garden areas and I have been informed by these "experts" that wasps are very docile and that is even if they are moving at all in February. As I am told they almost go into a "hibernate" state until the weather warms up. So thinking, I'll take their advice and I'll ignore them. Well lo and behold this batch of wasps we anything but docile. I have succeeded in getting stung not once but twice within the last few days, (I think paranoia is starting to set in) . The first one got me square in the throat, but being a team player and a company guy, I didn't fold like a lawn chair, I didn't cry, I didn't take my ball and go home, I simply had someone spray solarcaine and I was back on the job pronto.. never missed a beat. Same goes for the second sting, I triumphed, persevered, came out a winner. I wasn't about to let a "tame" little wasp stand in the way of productivity.

In closing, this little story is just another chapter in the adventure I endure of being an employee here at Rittenhouse

Enjoy!

New Self Propelled Top Dresser

Wow, finally a self propelled top dresser that is only 30" wide which will fit through pretty much any gate. It features a GX120 Honda engine, pneumatic wheels with an extra wide wheel base for superior stability. Steel construction with a hopper capacity of 200 pounds. What a nice machine.

Well, this is very exciting. Our first day and we already have our second post.

This will make the professional landscaping community happy.
